Our story

The founders of Robataya Izakaya wants to bring the most authentic way of Japanese charcoal grill to the diners. Many japanese restaurants use the mordern way of charcoal grill which does not retain the juiciness of the meat. Some restaurants don't even use charcoal to prepare Japanese grill dishes. The founders went to Japan and was impressed by a century old restaurant which was using an "irori" to grill meats.

Have a drink

at the bar

An izakaya 居酒屋 is a type of informal gastropub. Izakaya's are casual places for after work drinking in Japan. At Robataya 炉端や, we serve a wide variety of alcoholic beverages including draft beer, sake, sochu, wine, whisky, and cocktails. Many food items in our menu are designed to be shared. The taste of our dishes are also more robust in order to pair with the alcoholic drinks.

Why Robataya Izakaya is the most authenthic Japanese grill restaurant?

Many charcoal grill Japanese restaurants use the modern way to grill meats. The source of heat is from the bottom and meats are in contact with the grill. Meats and seafood get burnt easily and loses its juiciness.

Robataya

truly robatayaki

The founders of Robataya Izakaya restaurants have brought a team of advisors from Japan to build an “irori” in our restaurants for cooking the food in our menu. We are one of the few robatayaki restaurant using the most authentic way for charcoal grill

BLUE FIN TUNA SASHIMI

Most Japanese restaurants in Malaysia serve yellow-fin tuna from Indonesia which is inferior in quality and taste compared to blue-fin tuna. There are a few restaurants serving blue-fin tuna but they don’t import the whole tuna fish from Japan and instead they just purchase a small block of meat from the wholesalers. Robataya Izakaya restaurant serves very fresh blue-fin tuna dishes because we import the whole blue-fin tuna from Japan once a week.

The whole tuna arrives fresh from Japan and it is cut into sashimi by our experienced chef right infront of the eye of the diners. The tuna collar is also our signature dish because it can only be grilled using our “irori”. Other Japanese restaurant will find great difficulty to grill the tuna collar because the size is simply too big to fit into any conventional grilling equipments.

What is irori?

An “irori” (囲炉裏, 居炉裏) is a sunken hearth (fireplace) built at the centre of homes of the Japanese many years ago. The irori is used for cooking or to keep warm during winter.

What is Robatayaki?

Robatayaki (炉端焼き, literally "fireside-cooking"), refers to a method of cooking in which premium pieces of meat or seafood are cooked at varying speeds over hot charcoal. Robatayaki originates from a centuries-old country style of cooking by northern Japanese at home around a communal hearth (irori). This method of grilling meat or seafood on an “irori” has been incorporated into many restaurants in the northen region of Japan and is called Robatayaki.

Airflown Seafood from Tokyo Fish Market

Our team of dedicated chefs has developed an extensive menu with the help of the Japanese team. Our menu offering reaches a total of more than 400 dishes for the customers to choose from. Our menu offering is fast gaining popularity among diners of all ages from the very young to the elderly. We are also one of the few Japanese restaurants which serve fresh air-flown seafood imported directly from Japan.

Three-way cooking

One of our speciality is we offer three-way cooking for every fish the customer select from the air-flown seafood basket. In other words, the customer pay for one price of the fish and get three types of dishes. Popular choices for three-way cooking are sashimi, robatayaki, and bone soup whereby we use half of the fish for sashimi, another half for robatayaki (grill), and we use the remaining part of the fish (bone) for cooking the soup.
